Biofeedback — Treatment Approaches

Biofeedback is a treatment that generally incorporates psychophysiological therapy, education, and training on biofeedback instrumentation to address specific symptoms and goals. The main forms of biofeedback training include electromyographic (EMG) which measures striate muscle tension; thermal which measures skin temperature; electrodermal activity (EDA) which measures the skin’s electrical conductance. All are tools sending information on internal bodily processes back to the patient who can then learn to modify those processes. An intriguing and growing area of biofeedback is neurofeedback (EEG therapy), which focuses on training the lower-frequency alpha and theta brain waves to induce states of profound mental calm and alertness.
