DESCRIPTION OF A SESSION
An ATM (Awareness Through Movement®) session is done in groups and incorporates actual physical movements, visualizations of movements and directed attention. A session usually includes a series of movements that relate to a specific functional action. The type of movements can include postural, crawling, standing, walking, breathing, reaching, and others. Students may explore the interaction of various muscles, or become more aware of the way they move and the amount of effort they use.
As they advance, the movements performed will increase, always emphasizing an awareness of what the movement is and how it is being done, as well as a perception of its ease and comfort. The student becomes increasingly more aware of the interaction of muscles, skeleton, mind, indeed self, in every action. In the end, movement becomes more efficient, creating less stress, and increasing a feeling of ease and well-being. The student is also encouraged to visualize the movement without actually performing it, once more to increase awareness and to encourage the brain to develop a pattern of impulses and sensitivity to the desired skill.
Functional Integration® sessions are usually done with the fully clothed person lying on a table, sitting or standing. The practitioner will gently touch or move the student, gaining a sense through this of the persons neuromuscular organization and how they respond to touch and movement. Touch is used to increase awareness of the patterns of ones present movements. It is person who ultimately discovers or assembles a new way of movement which the practitioner can then help integrate into everyday life.
COURSE OF TREATMENT
SIDE EFFECTS
The Feldenkrais Method is a learning process, not a medical treatment or therapy. It is a series of lessons that cultivates a quiet awareness, an inner attunement and participation in a slow process of change. There are no known side effects. Movements are gentle and always performed within safe limits. Thus no pain or strain should be experienced.
SAFETY ISSUES
Finding a qualified practitioner is the key to effective and safe treatment. The Feldenkrais Method is a gentle series of movements that should be done in a slow, conscious and easy manner with no force or strain. If any pain or discomfort is experienced, that movement should be discontinued immediately.
OTHER MODALITIES THAT WORK WELL WITH THIS APPROACH
The Feldenkrais Method can be used to support other approaches where increased awareness and relaxation, lessening of effort, strain and tension, and enhanced mobility and flexibility would be of benefit.
