There are four overall treatment approaches to hypnosis. Symptomatic hypnotherapy is used for symptom reduction. Supportive ego strengthening hypnotherapy is utilized for dealing with current life issues and coping, such as stressful life-cycle events. Psychoanalytically-oriented hypnotherapy and hypnoanalysis (analysis combined with the use of hypnosis) are used to help work through long standing personal issues. Developmental hypnotherapy involves long term treatment and deals with developmental personality issues.
There are many different techniques in hypnosis which are used to facilitate learning. These include progressive relaxation, visualization, projective techniques, post hypnotic suggestions, guided imagery, rehearsal, and age regression, to name a few.
