Through the Center

Drs. Kligler, Merrell and Lee are involved with the curriculum committee at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), working to include more teaching on the integrative approach into the undergraduate curriculum.

Postgraduate Education

Over the past nine years, the Beth Israel Medical Center Residency Program in Urban Family Practice has offered its residents a required curriculum in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the month of February. The centerpiece of this curriculum is a one-month required block rotation in CAM in the second year of the residency program. In September 1999, the program instituted this required month rotation in CAM for the first time under the direction of course director Dr. Benjamin Kligler. This one month experience brings all the second year Family Medicine residents together for a four week block. During this time, participants receive twenty hours per week of didactic/experiential education in herbal medicine, hypnotherapy/mind-body medicine, nutritional medicine and osteopathic manipulation. The faculty for the month is interdisciplinary and includes nursing professionals, CAM practitioners, and physician faculty. The overall goal for the month is to have residents develop a basic understanding of each of the four modalities above, at a level sufficient to allow them to intelligently consider integrating these modalities into their discussions with their primary care continuity patients.

Outside residents are invited to participate in this one month elective, which takes place in early spring.

Beth Israel Medical Center Acupuncture Fellowship Program
Arya Nielsen, PhD

The Department of Integrative Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center is pleased to announce the development of a fellowship training program in acupuncture for inpatient care. The program is open to qualified licensed acupuncturists who have an interest in integrative medicine, in the development of research and in advancing standards of acupuncture practice to include inpatient care.

Training will include work in one or more areas of specialization such as the department of surgery, cardiology, oncology, pulmonology, rehabilitation, and hospice care as well as care for hospital staff through employee services.

Fellows will work two four-hour shifts a week providing acupuncture to patients at Beth Israel Medical Center. They will receive training in protocols for their specialization placement as well as research development. This will include learning to conduct a thorough literature search, develop a research protocol that meets Institutional Review Board standards, and prepare articles for medical journal review.

Fellows will also participate in Beth Israel Medical Center’s Physician Faculty Fellowship program in Integrative Medicine that includes both seminar-style lectures by specialists in various fields related to integrative medicine as well as rounds discussions of patient care. The lectures, rounds and research development are expected to require an additional four hours a week for twelve hours total. The program is designed to allow acupuncture fellows to continue work in their own private practices while participating in the training program.

Fellows will be expected to work toward developing a research project during their tenure with the program. The program will span nine months starting September 2008, with enrollment open again in January 2009. Tuition for the fellowship training is $4,500.

The goal of the Acupuncture Fellowship Program is to not only train individual acupuncturists in hospital-based care but to encourage and support their future work in other hospitals interested in expanding their services to include acupuncture. The program is directed by Arya Nielsen, PhD. Doctor Nielsen has been practicing acupuncture for over 30 years, the last eight in an integrative medical setting. She has an academic research doctorate in interdisciplinary studies and philosophies of medicine with a specialization in integrative clinical science and health care.

Licensed acupuncturists who are interested in applying for Beth Israel Medical Center’s Acupuncture Fellowship Program can contact Dr. Nielsen by email or telephone.
